WHAT IS FAIR TRADE?
Fair Trade is a partnership based on dialogue, mutual understanding and respect for farmers and artisans. Fair Trade means that farmers and artisans get a fair, living wage for their crops and products. Through Fair Trade, farming and working families are able to eat better, send their kids to school, improve health and housing, and invest in their future. Fair Trade builds equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creates opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. By supporting Fair Trade, you are directly helping developing countries climb out of poverty one family at a time, as well as protecting them from human trafficking.
HOW IS FAIR TRADE BETTER?
In today’s global economic environment, corporations
are typically sourcing overseas with a view to drive down their costs
and maximize sales and profits. By using their immense bargaining power,
they take advantage of weak regulatory rules in developing countries
and source low quality products and cheap labor, often with no regard
for environmental, cultural and social impact on the local communities. While big and small companies flood the US market and woo consumers with low quality products at the cheapest possible prices, the biggest negative impact is often on the poorest farm and factory workers overseas.
The typical garment mill worker in a developing nation, for instance, is paid exploitative wages, over-worked in unsafe, unhygenic ‘sweatshop’ conditions, intimidated and deprived of basic human dignity and a decent livelihood.
